National Park Service Old Courthouse Phase II Renovations, Gateway Arch National Park
Courthouses & Criminal Justice
AFG is providing construction management services within this project to rehabilitate and restore the Old Courthouse, a National Historic Landmark within Gateway Arch National Park. The Old Courthouse is located directly across from the St. Louis Arch Grounds and has served as a center of political and social activity since its original construction in 1816, with continued additions and construction taking place in phases over a 36-year evolution. Each wing within the structure was developed in a slightly different style with different construction methods, adding complexity to projects aiming to renovate and preserve the historic fabric.
This project, beginning in January 2023, provides accessibility and life-safety improvements, installation of a building-wide fire suppression and alarm system, updates to the heating and cooling systems, replacement of 140 sets of 6 over 6 windows, and exterior improvements. It will feature the removal of the 1941 NPS era steam heating system and window air conditioning units, and the installation of a four-pipe hot and cold water modern heating and air conditioning system, with additional electrical system upgrades to support the new HVAC systems. Accessibility upgrades within the project include upgrades to three accessible restroom spaces, installation of an elevator, and ramps to address finished floors and accessible public spaces. AFG will also be coordinating exterior improvements to the Ameren Vault and Duct Bank and exterior chiller courtyard.
