GSA Abernethy Federal Building Modernization and Mold Remediation Project

Courthouses & Criminal Justice

In spring 2021, GSA Region 7 awarded AFG group a contract to provide Construction Manager as Advisor and Commissioning services within the Thomas G. Abernethy Federal Building in Aberdeen, MS. The Abernethy Federal Building and courthouse, constructed in 1973, is a three-story building in the center of downtown Aberdeen.

In 2017 the Abernethy building was deemed uninhabitable due to mold and moisture infiltration. The building was unable to regulate the indoor airflow and temperature, resulting in condensation build-up on interior walls, water leaks, and mold on interior surfaces.

AFG is providing CMa and Cx support during this three-year renovation and restoration project, with the expected completion of returning tenants to the leased spaces by 2024. This project will modernize the Abernethy Federal Building, including major alterations to the building’s mechanical and electrical infrastructure, replacement of the Building Automation System (BAS), remediating mold and hazardous materials contamination, and fire and life safety upgrades.

Exterior alterations for this project also include the tightening of the exterior envelope. AFG’s team will be supporting through project oversight during the planning, design, construction, and commissioning of the project.
