Michael Herson, PE, Recipient of the 2020 NIH Director’s Award

The NIH Director’s Award recognizes superior performance or special efforts directly related to fulfilling the mission of NIH.

The National Institutes of Health, Bethesda Campus Pedestrian Safety Project Team, was selected for the award by Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., NIH Director.

Mike is a member of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda Campus Pedestrian Safety Project Team, which was selected by Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., NIH Director, “For exceptional service in dramatically improving pedestrian safety throughout the NIH Bethesda Campus by upgrading nine intersections and twenty mid-block pedestrian crossings.”

The multi-year, $3M safety improvement project involved adding flashing lights to inform vehicular traffic of pedestrians either in or about to enter the roadway, upgraded sidewalk crossings, curbs and gutters, and improved landscaping for better site lines.

Interesting fact about Mike is that in addition to a successful career as a licensed professional electrical engineer, he is also a former professional baseball player, having played for both the Baltimore Orioles and the Milwaukee Brewers between 1968-1974.
