GSA / AFG Group Team Wins Two CMAA National Capital Chapter Project of the Year Awards

The AFG/GSA Team is honored to receive two 2021 CMAA NCC Project of the Year Awards.

Herndon, VA | The AFG Group, Inc. (AFG) / U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Team is honored to receive two 2021 Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Project of the Year Awards from the Association’s National Capital Chapter.

The awards recognize GSA/AFG’s outstanding construction management practices and successful project completion on the GSA Central Utility Plant 2 and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Ruckelshaus Conference Center.

For the Central Utility Plant 2, AFG served as the Construction Management team for GSA to oversee the $79.3M design-build project on the historic St. Elizabeth West Campus in Washington, DC. The 3-story, 35,000SF, LEED Gold structure services the Level-5 secure U.S. Department of Homeland Security Headquarters. The AFG/GSA team successfully managed the strict requirements by the client for its challenging location, unusual installation practices with a below ground utility structure, and multiple unexpected site discoveries. The project was awarded Project of the Year in the Water/Wastewater/Utility greater than $50M Category.

Despite a once in a century global pandemic, city-wide protests, political challenges, and an extremely restricted 306-day schedule, AFG as the construction manager for GSA delivered the $17.6M, cutting-edge 20,813SF Ruckelshaus Conference Center Renovation in Washington, DC for the EPA in time for their 50-Year Anniversary Celebration. To meet the tight deadline, AFG ensured each phase was carefully coordinated, utilized the latest in 3D scanning technology for virtual inspections, and regularly hosted stakeholder engagement sessions to mitigate delays to the schedule and increases to the project budget. The project was awarded Project of the Year in the Government less than $50M Category.

AFG has been invited to speak about the lessons learned on the EPA Ruckelshaus Conference Center Renovation at the upcoming CMAA National Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to be held September 12-14, 2021.

“I am extremely proud of our teams and the work accomplished, particularly given the wide array of challenges encountered over the life-cycle of each project. The GSA-AFG team has once again demonstrated that with collaborative planning, innovative approaches, and perseverance, project success is near certain.”
