AFG supported the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Division of Design and Construction Management (DDCM) by providing Quality Assurance Inspections and Services for renovations and construction across a variety of sites including the 300-acre Main Campus in Bethesda, MD; Animal Center in Poolesville, MD; The Integrated Research Facility (Ft. Detrick) in Frederick, MD; Gerontology Research Center (Bayview) in Baltimore, MD; and leased facilities in Bethesda, Rockville, Gaithersburg, and Baltimore, MD. In total, NIH consists of 27 different Institutes and Centers supporting research through the United States and internationally, with buildings dating back to completion in 1938.

Under the Quality Assurance Program, AFG provides QA inspections associated with the demolition, renovation, modification, repair, and new construction of NIH facilities and infrastructure. AFG’s Quality Assurance Team oversees an average of 25-35 projects simultaneously each month, ranging in value from $5,000 to $9M. Due to the nature of the mission of each campus, NIH laboratories and offices remain occupied during the work week, requiring that AFG work closely with NIH and stakeholders to schedule utility shutdowns and work outside of standard hours to avoid conflicts with tenants.
