AFG Group Inc. provided design and construction management on the $14 million, 314,000 SF renovation and modernization of the U.S. Courthouse & Annex building in Richmond, Virginia. The courthouse building was originally constructed in 1858, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The courthouse annex building was constructed in 1936.

The project scope consisted of the large courthouse expansion, conversion of the old post office, expanding the library, and increase of the court clerk spaces. The HVAC and plumbing systems were upgraded and an energy management system was installed. A fire protection and alarm system, and new telecommunication and data systems were installed. In addition, all of the historic windows were replaced in the annex.

AFG was initially responsible for facility condition assessments, to include the metal window system and other exterior elements. AFG also conducted design reviews, constructability reviews, prepared cost estimates, and developed project schedules. During construction, AFG performed construction surveillance and inspection, project documentation and administration.
